Another day, another Firefox beta. While Mozilla has teased the new Mozilla Marketplace for web apps for their browser, it still hasn't launched. With the 18th version of the Firefox beta, users can expect performance improvements as well as some under-the-hood changes for developers.
Mac users will gain support for Apple's Retina Displays. UI elements will no long look fuzzy on these high resolution displays. Mozilla claims that there will be a noticable improvement while watching movies, playing games, and browsing the web.
A great security addition in the Firefox 18 beta is the option to disable insecure elements on a web page. This makes sure that users only get encryped and secured parts of a website, reducing the chances of compromising any information.
Firefox 18 beta also adds support for W3C touch controls. These controls enable touch-supported devices to track your finger movements, learning how to interpret touches. The W3C controls are still in early stages of development so don't expect them to work that well.
For developers, Firefox 18 beta adds IonMonkey and a new JavaScript JIT (just in time) complier. This will help speed up web apps, games, and loading JavaScript heavy web pages. These tools are still buggy and you will probably notice that speed takes a slight dip in this beta.
