HyperCam is an app that allows you to video capture the action from an area of your PC desktop.

If you've ever wanted to make a screencast showing people how to do something, or just video what's happening on your screen, you'll need a screen capture tool like HyperCam. Simply install the application and you can start recording a portion or all of the action on your screen. There are record and play buttons on the HyperCam interface, of you can activate it via configurable hotkeys. Depending on what you need, you can specify a framerate, and highlight mouse clicks with a flash in the recorded video.

While HyperCam does do what it claims, it's not a very well designed program. You may find that video you record plays back at double the speed it should, without reason. Sound recording is also unreliable - on our Windows 7 systems, we were unable to record any sound, from music players, video files or browser video. We also found HyperCam to be a little unstable, and were disappointed that the default installation process doesn't put the app in your standard Program Files folder.

There are better screencapture tools around, like Fraps that are much more modern and better designed. HyperCam is a basic application that is in real need of a new version!

Flash animation is a technology that can all to easily be abused and there are numerous examples throughout the web where it has been used without justification resulting in non-accessible pages, annoying animations or amateurish-looking sites. On the other hand, when used correctly, Flash can add another dimension to your site, setting it apart from the masses and really giving the user a rounded and fulfilling experience. Text-Osterone is a library of text effects that you can easily configure much in the same way as the various transition effects of Microsoft PowerPoint.

The multitude of options may be daunting for inexperienced users but in reality the majority are non-essential and will only be called to action if a very particular result is sought. Thanks to an automatically refreshing preview window, each change you make can be checked before exporting and as a consequence the process of trial and error is much speedier.

The cracks begin to show however after you?ve checked out a few of the available effects. Since many of them are basic it seems like overkill to have a separate program to take care of them and would make more sense to get a copy of Flash Professional and build them from scratch. What?s more Text-Osterone, as the name suggests, has been designed to deal with text only. No options exist to work with basic shape animations, which might be handy if you want a corporate logo to feature.

Text-Osterone is a program that has been designed for those who have no experience whatsoever with Flash and as a result will more than likely produce substandard pages. As such, beginners can get a feel of what is possible and of course add more than just plain test to their site. It makes a good toy for those with curiosity but should not be used in an advanced setting.

Garena allows you to connect with a global network of game players so that you'll always have someone to play against.

Garena currently supports quite a limited number of games but does include some major titles such as Age of Empires I and II, Battlefield 2, Bordelands, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 and 2, Call Of Duty: World At War, Counter Strike: Source, Call Of Duty 2, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Red Alert 3, Starcraft, Team Fortress 2 and Warcraft 3.

When you download and install Garena, you have to create and account to log into the Garena network. You will be assigned an avatar that will identify you within the Garena community. You can instantly see who is online and which players are at a similar ability to you. Garena seems somewhat more focused on some games more than others though e.g. World of Warcraft 3, for which there is even an online video channel and high-level championship mode.

To communicate with other gamers, Garena has its own Instant Messaging and internal mail system and forums to discuss gaming issues. There's also a points system for those users with more experience and forum activity.

Garena isn't compatible with enough major titles but for those it does work with, it's a simple way of finding like-minded gamers.

AOL has been on the internet just about as long as I can remember so you'd expect AIM to be a pretty decent instant messenger. However, the proof is in the pudding. Nowadays, MSN Messenger and Skype users far outnumber AIM users which shows that at the nd of the day, it's not one of the heavy hitters. AIM was, however, one of the first to incorporate voice, video and desktop-to-mobile messaging and so should at least be given credit for pioneering this technology.

The instant messaging list on AIM has space for 500 friends and enables you to organize your chats and status messages easily. It also allows you to send bigger files than most IM services. AIM's video conferencing function is however much more hassle and it's not immediately obviously how to start a conference until you scroll through the menus. AIM also features it's own e-mail service although obviously, you need to sign up for an AOL account to use it which can turn into a long drawn out affair in itself.

There's no real advantage of using AOL's IM mail compared to others apart from the fact that it does feature a handy "unsend" function if you've sent an e-mail in error. Of course, there's the obligatory SMS function although this is limited to US users and if your phone supports it, you can also use AOL messenger on the move.

AIM is a bit of a disappointing effort from one of the originators of Instant Messaging but still has a few redeeming features that make it worth a try.

BreakTaker is a very simple application with only a few options to adjust. You can change how many minutes pass before the next alert, enable/disable sounds, and choose whether to pause the timer when the PC is locked.

While BreakTaker does provide reminders to take breaks, there's no option to make sure that the user takes his or her break. We would like to see an option where the user can be locked out until a certain amount of time has passed. Without this, it is very easy for the user to ignore BreakTaker's notification.

BreakTaker is good for giving users a simple pop-up reminder to take breaks, but there aren't enough advanced features to make sure that users don't ignore the application.

One of the features that makes Orion File Recovery Software so user-friendly is that every time you open the program, it starts a recovery wizard. For example, Orion File Recovery Software will search for music, pictures, documents and other file types, whether or not you can remember the file name.

Speed and results

Depending on the size of the drive you've selected to search, Orion File Recovery Software could take a longer or shorter time to find what you're looking for. When we used it, though, it was pretty speedy, and displays all its results in a very clear grid format. From here, you can either recover the file or erase it beyond recovery, and handy security feature.

The verdict

File recovery apps are hit and miss and success depends on a lot of factors. Orion File Recovery Software is no exception, but in general we found the results - especially for a free app - very promising. It can't guarantee that you'll get back what you're looking for, but it's an excellent first place to start.

You've also got the option to export via the program interface or via the command line. There are also possibilities to specify the number of database records to be copied into one line - thus, if you specify 3 and database record count is 24, then the database will be copied into 8 lines. There are also several useful functions for data manipulating and bookmarking.

For those that work regularly with tables and formulas and find that Windows clipboard is not sufficient, Exportizer is a quality solution.

The performance of GeekUninstaller is impressive. It uninstalls quickly and finds leftover files that even CCleaner couldn't. There are options to view a program's folder, website, and even to Google search a program if you don't remember what it is. There is also support for a plethora of languages.

Overall, GeekUninstaller is an impressive maintenance tool that delivers on both performance and features. Highly recommended.

Kodak Easyshare is software to organize, view and edit your photos - whether or not you have a Kodak camera.

Kodak Easyshare includes pretty much all the tools you would expect from a photo manager, such as being able to organize photos in albums, adding tags, retouching images that need a bit of optimization and sharing them. You can choose between burning them to a CD or DVD, emailing them, uploading them to the Kodak Gallery and publishing them on Flickr or Facebook.

While Kodak Easyshare seems quite good at photo sharing, we found it a bit limited as photo manager. The range of tools is fine, but not spectacular and definitely not better than other similar apps. The program's interface design doesn't help either: it's confusing and even a bit messy. The app also seemed to take up an inordinate amount of memory, and as a result could be a sluggish and buggy.

You can use Kodak Easyshare without actually having a Kodak account, however you'll find many places in the application where it encourages you to do so. Not having a Kodak Easyshare account will in any case limit your use of the application, as you won't be able to order printed copies of your photos or create projects.

Kodak Easyshare is a digital photo organizer that includes a bunch of tools to manage and edit photos. It might be worth a look if you've already got a Kodak account, but in the rest of cases, we'd advise you to look elsewhere.

Although GizmoRip is a pretty solid program with a sleek but simple interface, the app can't always find your Apple device. If this is the case, unplug it from your PC, then try plugging it in again. The process can be frustrating though, to say the least.

The trial version of this app limits users to 10 tracks per batch transfer.

GizmoRip is a great tool to recover music off your iPod, iPad and iPhone in the event of a PC hard drive crash.

QQ Messenger may not sound familiar, but it's the most popular IM client in China.

When you think about IM clients, the first names that come to your head are Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and the likes. But have you ever heard of QQ Messenger?

With more than one billion registered accounts, QQ Messenger is now more than just a simple IM client: it's a whole social phenomenon that millions of people use on a daily basis, and an essential part of their lives.

The truth is that QQ Messenger is not that different from other IM clients you may have used. There are the typical contacts list ? which you can organize by groups - support for voice and video chats, smileys, nudges, ability to send photos and share files (with support for pause/resume!), and other utilities we're used to finding in IM clients. There's one important difference however: in QQ Messenger you hardly find any ads!

Besides the traditional IM tools, QQ Messenger also includes some not-so-common features. You'll be able to capture an area of your screen or record a short video clip on the spot, and share both of them instantly with your contacts. Another area where QQ Messenger stands out is personalization. You can customize almost anything, from choosing a skin for the interface to selecting the font for your messages. The program also includes a wide selection of avatars and personal pictures to choose from, but if you don't like any of them, simply upload one from your hard drive. The only thing that didn't work for us was downloading more themes from the Web.

QQ Messenger is mainly a tool for chat, but it can also be used to help your friends or customers thanks to its integrated Remote assistance tool: a basic remote control app that grants you access to your friend's desktop and enables you to help them with any computer issue.

In general terms, QQ Messenger surprised us for various reasons: first, it features a nicely designed interface with cute buttons and icons, which is hard to find in IM clients; second, it has interesting extra features that make it a complete communication tool; and third, it's amazing how such a popular program with more than a billion users is still known by so few people over here!

On the downside, I have to admit that QQ Messenger was a bit unreliable when trying to add contacts - which, by the way, are identified with numbers, like good old ICQ. Not a very user-friendly method, I'd say. Other than that, QQ Messenger is a great IM cilent that is definitely worth trying out.

QQ Messenger, the most widely used IM client in China, has now an international version that may help it become even more popular!

OneLoupe is a digital rectangular lens to zoom in on anything that appears on your screen. The only way you can open this program is by clicking on the icon in the system tray. Once you have done that you can move the lens around and, by turning the mouse?s scroll wheel, zoom in and out up to 9X.

The application is extremely light and can be useful for everyone, not just for people with sight problems. There are two major weak points I?ve noticed, though. One is that you can?t launch the program by simply pressing a combination of keys or with the right click button of the mouse. The other is that when zooming in, the application doesn?t even try to recalculate what?s displayed and both text and images become highly pixilated. Especially with texts, I don?t think it would have been a very difficult algorithm to implement.

While the lens is on, if you press the ?b? key, the program copies what?s being magnified to the clipboard. This is a useful and time-saving function, especially for presentations or whenever you need a visual example of what you are talking about.

OneLoupe can open a digital lens to zoom in on a text or a picture and paste what?s spotlighted in the clipboard with just one click.

eXceed 2nd ? Vampire REX is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up (shmup). It's a 'bullet hell ' shmup - the sub genre that fills the screen with bullets, so players have to quickly weave around them while shooting enemies themselves.

The back story of eXceed 2nd ? Vampire REX is surprisingly complex, but all gamers really need to know is how it plays. This is a fast shoot 'em up, an features the 'polarity' mechanic: you can alternate your polarity during the game, switching between two colors. You absorb bullets of the same color, only having to avoid those of the other. Absorbing bullets charges your special weapon.

Unlike most Shmups, you control not a spaceship, but a character, Ria Fyle a half-human half-vampire girl. eXceed 2nd ? Vampire REX is a Manga style game, and the graphics are bright and cartoon-like. This game is a few years old, and it shows, but it's still very playable and smooth.

eXceed 2nd ? Vampire REX is a tough game, even on the easiest setting. You get three continues, but you can easily use them! There are eight levels, and while that sounds like a small number, it really is enough. Games like this are meant to be played, then played again until you get the best performance you can manage. Hard mode in eXceed 2nd ? Vampire REX really is very tough!

I'd recommend trying the demo for eXceed 2nd ? Vampire REX, to see if it's for you. As as shoot 'em up it's good, and offers an excellent challenge to fans.

Graboid is an application for streaming and downloading video. Its servers host over 150000 videos of movies and TV shows, updated regularly and each available for up to 240 days.

Users have to register, which is just a case of giving an email and user name, then you're off. Graboid claims not to infringe any copyright laws, although it's worth noting that as it lets you download full and recent movies for free, users should be careful what they are using Graboid for.

The range of shows and films available is impressive, and the streaming is good, although it tends to make the program lag a little. Downloading video is extremely fast, basically as fast as your connection will allow.

The video player in the browser is slow in general, but any downloaded content can be played in outside Graboid, so that's not a huge problem. The free account is limited to 30 days and 4 gigabytes of downloads. After this it's necessary to sign up for paid account to continue usage.

The program is easy to use, but suffers from slowdown a lot, which can result in accidental downloads, if you're impatiently clicking while Graboid catches up with what you're doing. Downloads we tried were about 90% successful - occasionally some failed to open after completion.

Graboid is an interesting service which is mostly let down by the application's slow speed and the issue of whether users are acting legally by downloading content from it, although the downloads are impressively fast.

Windows Explorer is not exactly the best file management system in the world but it does its job and Windows users don't have many other options.

However, Emerge Desktop is an interface replacement for Windows Explorer that doesn't really change the fundamental structure but does change the shell. Emerge Desktop works by providing a system tray called emergeTray which provides instant access to programs that are normally accessed with the Windows "Start" menu via a right-click on the desktop, As Microsoft have moved further towards opening up the code to Windows, Windows Explorer is one area that is undergoing improvement by various developers and Emerge Desktop takes advantage of this increased access to API calls.

Each part of Emerge Desktop (the tray and the taskbar) are individual executables called applets. These applets are all optional as part of Emerge Desktop and can be run individually on top of any other shell, including Explorer. Using Emerge Desktop's applets is a slightly slower experience than using Windows Explorer on its own but once you get used to it, it feels and looks a lot better. However, it can be annoying if you want to change back to Explorer because you have to reboot or log off to change back. To do this, just right click anywhere on the desktop and select "Settings" and "Change Desktop Shell".

Emerge Desktop has a lot of potential to advance Windows Explorer beyond that even available in Vista although if you find yourself switching between it and Explorer, it may be more hassle than it's worth.
