Radiotracker is an interesting program that allows you to record music from internet radio stations, a way of downloading music that the developers say is completely legal.

The Radiotracker interface won't be to everyone's liking. It seems crowded, and is not very intuitive. Reading the manual is an absolute must, even for the most basic tasks. Luckily, the help files are fairly complete, and there are plenty of Radiotracker tutorials online.

The basic concept is this: you choose a music style or artist/song and start recording. The downloaded (recorded) songs then appear in a window on the right where you can then listen, save or process them.
Radiotracker offers additional features such as format converter, a wishlist for finding songs not easily available and a very complete podcast function. It goes without saying that you can also listen to the music via the Radiotracker player or export it to your mobile device.

Any tool that helps you to get free, legal music is an interesting proposal. Radiotracker has ample configuration settings, automatically checks for updates, allows you to ban certain stations, syncs with your music player and uses intelligent filters when saving songs, so you don't get any duds.

Despite all these good points, there's a major 'but' - Radiotracker seems unnecessarily complicated. Although it may be a great program, it takes some effort to crack. While some users will be willing to put the work in, many will quickly tire of having to refer to the manual to identify every window and carry out every task.

PDF files can be a real pain if you want to take information from them and don't have Adobe Reader. Able2Extract is an application designed to make it easy to deal with.

The main selling point of Able2Extract is that it's especially designed to extract to Microsoft Word and Excel files - and other formats - with as much formatting and tables etc. intact as possible.

This trial version of Able2Extract lets you convert up to three pages at a time to whatever format you choose. The interface is really nicely designed, and won't cause anyone problems. Converting files from PDF could hardly be easier. Highlight what you want to convert and click convert.

For text PDFs the conversion quality is generally fantastic; we didn't notice any errors. When dealing with things like charts and graphs, Able2Extract isn't quite as good, although it deals with tables well if you convert to Excel format.

One criticism of Able2Extract is that many browsers can now handle PDF files directly, and also allow you to highlight the content, so you can copy/paste into other applications. PDF files are not as inaccessible as they used to be. Nevertheless, Able2Extract does the job very quickly.

If you deal with PDF files a lot, this is one of the most effective tools for extracting that we've seen, although it is quite pricey.

Although it might appear like some sort of Communist software, CCCP is actually just a pack of codecs to help just about any video run on your system.

The full title is the "Combined Community Codec Pack". In reality, it's more like a filter pack than a codec pack but the developers say that "filter doesn't begin with C and we wanted a good acronym"! The developers also like to point out that the name is also a pun on a Russian name which is transliterated into the Latin alphabet as "Soyuz Sovietskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik", or "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics", abbreviated as "USSR".

Anyway, the Combined Community Codec Pack was created to replace the filter packs provided by other groups which simply often did not work properly or broke compatibility for other formats. In reality, Combined Community Codec Pack is an extremely powerful Codec pack, playing back effortlessly most popular formats and some unpopular ones too. There are now fiddly options to get it working although if you have other codec packs installed, you may experience some conflicts or significant slowdown in reproduction of your films.

However, overall, Combined Community Codec Pack is an impressive pack which deals with just about anything and I quite like the attitude of the developers and their ironic communist branding.

As a result, for many people, this program may seem a bit too flimsy to trust 100% but if run alongside something like Ad-Aware as a backup tool, you don't have much to lose by trying it.

A valient effort although I still wouldn't change it for the trio of Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and Spyware Terminator.

The story in Lineage II: Goddess of Destruction revolves around Shilen, the goddess of the title. She has awoken and is using her dark powers to destroy the world. However, an opposing force in the shape of the last of the Giants has been released to fight back, and has made a deal with humanity to enlist their help. It's fantasy; it doesn't have to make sense!

What this all means of course is you get to choose one of 8 character classes - Yul Archer, Feoh Wizard, Iss Enchanter, Aeore Healer, Sigel Knight, Othell Rogue, Wynn Summoner, or Tyrr Warrior. You'll then be sent on a series of quests, increasing in difficulty and requiring more and more experience to survive them.

Graphically, Lineage II: Goddess of Destruction is perfectly acceptable for a modern MMORPG, and the world of Lineage provides lots of scope for exploration. Gameplay is pretty straightforward too, although World of Warcraft veterans will miss keyboard shortcuts. This is an oversight that might seriously annoy experiences players.

Lineage II: Goddess of Destruction isn't quite up to WoW standards, but it ticks all the MMORPG fantasy boxes, and the free model makes it really accessible.

The interface is easy to use and will probably be well suited to first time users. You'll also find that Cyberduck is compatible with most external editors like BBEdit, TextWrangler or TextMate.

One major complaint coming from Cyberduck users is that FTP login and transfers can be a little slow. Obviously this is a bit of a drawback, since transfer speed is one of the main benchmarks of FTP clients. However, many of the fixes introduced in the latest version compensate somewhat for this. The CPU hogging issue after completed downloads has been fixed as has the option to connect to services such as Dropbox.

Overall, Cyberduck is an efficient and elegant open source FTP client.

Counter-Strike Online is a classic FPS online multiplayer FPS, and deserves its place in history. while it looks its age, this version adds lots of fun add-ons and a dynamic community of players to get involved with.

Shotty is the perfect companion for all those of you who share screenshots online: a quick, easy-to-use image capture tool with convenient sharing capabilities.

Once installed on your system, Shotty sits unobtrusively in the system tray. The program icon gives you access to its image capturing functions ? with a left click ? and also to a context menu with configuration options with a right click.

Shotty lets you grab the whole screen, a selected area or the currently active window, and save the captured image to your hard drive. As an extra, Shotty supports transparency effects in Windows 7 and Vista, which is very useful if you plan to save these images as .PNG and edit them later on in Photoshop. If you only need to do some quick editing, such as cropping, adding blurred areas or marking important spots on the image, you can use Shotty?s built-in editor.

But the best feature in Shotty is undoubtedly its ability to share the image online right away, uploading it to one of the photo sharing services supported by the program: ImageShack.us, Twitpic.com, DirectUpload.net and others. Unfortunately the behavior of this feature was a bit erratic, as it didn't seem to work properly unless you enabled the 'Show configuration before upload' option.

They are then displayed as a modifiable tree diagram, where parent and child tasks, color-coding and easy moving make your notes extremely easy to organize and view.

My Notes Keeper has an impressive range of features and configuration options, the majority of which are designed to help you get as much detail as possible into each note. You can add links and images, attach documents, import data, export the notes and print and structure your trees as desired. It is this range of flexibility and content which makes the program so versatile. Although the developer's suggestion that you can use it as a photo album is probably stretching a little, it would be perfect for any kind of research, especially if the notes could be typed up directly in the program.

If organized notes and information is central to your task, you're probably going to like My Notes Keeper. It makes it very easy to see the relationship between different areas of information and once the note has been written, it is easy to change, move or erase it, which means it is perfect for research, which is likely to change and develop over time. My Notes Keeper is quite detailed, and while some will appreciate the depth this adds to their work, many others just won't need such a wealth of extra information.

The interface is almost identical, with one exception - you view the overall 'tree' on the left and the current document in a big pane on the right. This pane acts as a word processor, which means that you can either type directly into it, or import in RTF format. You can also add other files, like images, or create links to information in other formats, like PDFs. Working with Maple is very easy - you drag and drop your data and use the Word-like editing tools to format it as you please.

Maple's trees (the system of documents as a whole) can be modified just as easily. If you want to move a node (a document that makes up part of the tree), you just drag it to where you want, which is perfect if you change your mind about a category or want to create a new one. If you want a new tree, however, bear in mind that you will have to create a whole new document.

Maple has an impressive range of export options in case you want bring your tree elsewhere, and it strikes me as the perfect program for people who have a large number of related but different documents, such as a recipe collection or research work. It's a pity you can only import RTF and a handful of other files directly into Maple, but apart from that, Maple is a very useful program that will undoubtedly help you become more productive.

Maple is perfect for users with large volumes of information that needs organizing.

In addition, Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 has two different interface options for you to choose from. One looks like a pre-2007 Microsoft Word, while the 2012 interface option is a little more colorful and aesthetically pleasing.

There are also some new features that were added specifically to this latest version of Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012. One useful new tool is the ability to adjust your paragraphs via a simple drag and drop action. There's also a a cover pages setting that comes complete with a great variety of templates to choose from.

The nice thing is that if you're familiar with Word, this processor's interface will be easy to navigate since it's very similar. This program does cost money to purchase a license key, however, which open source alternatives like LibreOffice and Open Office do not. It will ultimately come down to preference as to which word processor you choose if you're looking for an alternative to Word.

Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 is very similar and a good alternative to Microsoft Word for users who want to try something new with lots of the same features.

Most PC users are accustomed to massive media players that hog resources and take up large portions of your PC's hard drive. This is why finding a small, simple, and lightweight player such as Winyl is so great when it actually happens.

The program's interface is divided into two panels: a primary one with your current playlist and a smaller one that has a tree-like structure. The latter enables you to filter music according to different criteria. To add music in Winyl, simply right-click on the top toolbar and select the Library option. You can also add complete folders or individual files via a personalized Add menu. Winyl includes support for star rankings, much like iTunes, and can also display ID tags. Unfortunately, you can't edit ID tags, making its functionality a little limited.

There are also a few different skin options you can use for Winyl, including one that makes it actually look like iTunes. This is a definite plus for someone who prefers to personalize their audio player a little and make it more their own. Winyl is also fast and stable, so it doesn't overwhelm system resources. For someone who doesn't need a complete multimedia station on their PC, this is a fantastic option.

Imagine a desktop wallpaper that actually 'lives' in real time. That's exactly what the makers of EarthDesk have attempted, creating a live map of the globe that shows real time light and cloud conditions.

EarthDesk features three map views (Political, Natural Color and Living Earth Satellite), 11 projections, and 10,000 cities. You have many options that cover how the Earth is projected onto your desktop, the centering of the map, and how you want it to refresh. Note that EarthDesk does not install itself as a standalone application - it simply loads as a preference pane, from where you can administer it.

When you install the EarthDesk in your preference pane, you're presented with the configuration options. The first thing you need to do is choose a city to center it on in the Locations tab (your hometown location in other words). There are 10,000 to go through but fortunately you can search for them using the search box.

The Display tab is the most interesting as regards setup. In here, you can configure what kind of view you want to use, how far you want to zoom into the Earth and how close you want to see the clouds. Note that you can access the preferences at any time from the menu bar, where you'll see the EarthDesk icon although you'll have to activate this option in the actual preferences itself.

You'll have to experiment for quite a while to find the view that you like. One thing I definitely recommend however is zooming into the planet because it's a bit more interesting than seeing the globe as a whole (at least during the day anyway). The cloud formations you see are the actual clouds in the sky at any given moment and their movements update according to the time schedule you've specified.

All things considered, this isn't particularly interesting. There's a saying 'About as interesting as watching paint dry' - and 'watching clouds move' could be used in the way. I imagine that EarthDesk is more interesting at night when darkness falls and you start to cities light up. I also experienced problems stopping and starting Earth Desk - the second time I tried to start it, it simply wouldn't.

EarthDesk is an interesting desktop background for geographers, those keen on keeping an eye on weather movements in real time, or simply those that want a slightly more original desktop background.

In Amalur everyone has a destiny, so the future is pre-ordained, but your character was brought back from the dead and can act however you want. This is a neat way of explaining your influence in Amalur.

Combat and customization
In terms of dialogue and environment, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning isn't very inspired. Where the game excels is in its customization and combat, which is really satisfying. Fighting requires timing and thought, while the combinations of abilities and weapons you can apply are huge. Fighting is much more dynamic and crunchy than most RPGs, even Skyrim.

Graphically, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has a cartoony style similar to World of Warcraft, but this game is a lot more action packed. The opening of the game might be slow for RPG veterans, but it allows you to get to grips with the combat system and customize your character.

Conclusions
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning doesn't have the great storytelling or characters of a Bioware game, nor is it as majestic and dramatic as Skyrim. However, the exciting combat and deep RPG gameplay make this an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys the genre.

It's also a fast, efficient way to help a friend - or even your customers - with software installation and configuration. But remote control apps are usually difficult to use and hog system resources.

Well, not anymore: now LogMeIn makes remote control easier than ever by providing you a simple, fast and free tool to access your PC from anywhere. Just download the client and create an account on their website, and you're ready to go.

The client should be installed and launched in the computers you want to access remotely. Then all you need to do is start your session in the LogMeIn webpage and you'll have immediate access to your computer. You'll be able to manage files, transfer data from the local machine to the remote machine and viceversa (only during the first 30 days, though) and even control the desktop and mouse in the remote PC, with a surprisingly quick response to mouse movements. You can create various users with different privileges or open your remote session temporarily to a guest user, so that he or she can see what you're doing on the PC.

On the downside, image resolution is obviously not very high when remote controlling (forget about viewing photos in the remote PC). Also, the Java-based file manager looks a bit sloppy but that's probably due to Java itself. In all, I think LogMeIn is one of the best free remote control apps I've tried.

Wobbly Tooth is a sweet story that's firmly aimed at little kids. You click or swipe through the pages, listening to the little boy, tell you what's going on in his quest to get rid of a wobbly tooth, without going to the dreaded Dr. Payne. At the end, there's a little jigsaw puzzle for your child to put together.

Unfortunately, Wobbly Tooth isn't optimized for English, or for use on a non-touchscreen device. Some of the pages didn't swipe, there were audio overlap problems, the jigsaw didn't fit on the screen and some of the translations were still in their original German.

Although a nice idea for a children's story, Wobbly Tooth doesn't make the grade.
